Novarupta, 1912 (VEI 6)
Novarupta volcano is part of the dreaded Pacific Ring (Rim) of Fire It is part of the Peninsula of Alaska. Among 20th century eruptions, this was the strongest of all. It measured a 6 on the VEI scale. Magma spewed into the air around 3.5 miles from the summit. It also included vast amounts of ash. As these fell, it spread out to cover an area of 3,000 square miles with more than 12 inches of ash.
