Hailstones are a form of precipitation.
Although the biggest hailstone was a large 8 inches in diameter, there could have been others which were larger than it which also fell during that day. The largest hailstone was melting or had already melted part way when it was found. It is possible that there were larger hailstones which were not noticed because they had already melted when the authorities came out to investigate. The irregular shape of the hailstone makes them melt faster as well.
