Santa Maria Volcano, 1902 (VEI 6)
Another powerful eruptions that happened during the 20th century was that of the Santa Maria Volcano in 1902. It remained inactive for half a millennium until it decided to show up with an explosion that measured a 6 on the VEI scale. The result was a caldera that a mile and a half wide located on the southwestern portion of the mountain. This is just one of a series of strato volcanoes around Guatemala’s Pacific coast.
