It may not seem to make sense that the giant jellyfish has a complicated life cycle and yet only lives for about a year. For all that two-stage sexuality, it only lives for a short time. In contrast, there are other jellyfishes which can live almost endlessly. Of course, those jellyfishes have an even more complicated life cycle. To live for only a year and still be the biggest jellyfish means that it would have to grow very fast, and eat a lot of other fishes and sea creatures to fuel that growth.
